Insoles & Orthotics
Custom-made orthotics are prescription medical devices designed specifically for your feet and individual biomechanical needs.
Optimising foot function
Custom-made orthotics are prescription medical devices designed specifically for your feet and individual biomechanical needs. Unlike off the shelf insoles, they are created from a 3D impression of the foot and using detailed information gathered during your biomechanical assessment, including your foot shape, gait pattern, joint function, and overall lower limb mechanics. The aim of a custom orthotic is not simply to cushion the foot, but to optimise the way your feet and lower limbs function during walking, running, and everyday activities.

Optimisation of body movement
By improving foot alignment and controlling abnormal movement patterns, custom orthotics can help reduce stress on joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments throughout the body. They are commonly prescribed to help manage a wide range of conditions, including plantar heel pain, tendon injuries, foot and ankle pain, knee pain, and symptoms associated with hypermobility.
Orthotics work by applying optional biomechanical forces to the foot, redistributing pressure, improving stability, enhancing efficiency of movement, and supporting the body's natural biomechanics.
The "Tissue stress model"
Sometimes our approach to orthotic therapy is based or combined with the Tissue Stress Model, which focuses on identifying and reducing excessive stress on injured or overloaded tissues rather than simply attempting to correct foot posture. Every person moves differently, and the same foot shape can cause different symptoms in different individuals. By carefully assessing which structures are under strain, such as tendons, ligaments, joints, muscles, or fascia, custom orthotics can be designed to alter the forces acting on these tissues during movement. This helps reduce pain, promote healing, improve function, and allow patients to return to their normal activities with greater comfort and confidence.

Orthotics for Different Activities
Orthotics can be designed to suit your individual needs, footwear and activities. We prescribe a range of custom-made orthotics, from slimline devices for dress shoes to more supportive options for everyday and sports footwear. Specialist orthotics can also be designed for activities such as skiing and cycling, where footwear and biomechanics have very specific requirements. For patients who require additional comfort or pressure relief, softer and more cushioned orthotics can be prescribed. Each pair is individually selected and designed following your biomechanical assessment
